Sturgeon Release Event

Sturgeon Release is a one-day event for elementary students. Classes name their respective sturgeon and release (along with a salmon fry for each student) it into the Nechako River. Following this activity classes can interact with up to 18 other stations.

This event is held in Vanderhoof at Riverside Park on the first Friday in June.

High school volunteers from Nechako Valley Secondary School help put on the event each year.

There are many Partners in Education that support this event, and provide stations for learning beyond just releasing a sturgeon.

Over 2000 names have been used over the years to name each of the sturgeon released during the event.

Learning extends beyond fish. It includes understanding about self and our interactions in the watershed, leading to greater learning.
